Belia Klaassen MD Dr. Belia Klaassen was born in The Netherlands and completed her medical degree at the University of Leiden. During the following two years she did postgraduate training in tropical medicine, which included training in surgery, internal medicine and gynecology/obstetrics. Then she completed a one-year postgraduate degree in general and family medicine, prior to departing to Tanzania in 1988. Here she worked in rural hospitals and coordinated primary health care programmes for 10 years. In 1997 she moved to Dar together with Ype Smit, and the IST Clinic in its current form was initiated. Her particular areas of interest and expertise are obstetrics and gynecology, ultrasound imaging, pediatrics, ophthalmology and internal medicine. In order to maintain her Dutch GP license she does at least 40 hours postgraduate CME training per year.
Ype Smit MD Ype Smit was born in Irian Jaya, which at that time was part of Dutch New Guinea and he spent his first 10 years in Papua New Guinea and Australia. On his return to the Netherlands he also graduated from Leiden University and thereafter completed a two year tropical medicine training which involved mainly surgery. Together with Dr. Belia Klaassen he completed a one-year postgraduate degree in general and family medicine and departed to Tanzania in 1988. Here he was initially medical officer in charge of a 200-bed rural hospital and later the health coordinator of Morogoro Diocese. On coming to Dar es Salaam in 1997 he and Dr. Belia Klaassen restructured the IST Clinic to its current form. His particular areas of interest are surgery, sports medicine, neurology, ear/nose/throat conditions and counseling. In order to maintain his Dutch GP license he does at least 40 hours of postgraduate CME training per year.
Laboratory
Mrs. Lieke Felten Mrs. Lieke Felten gained her degree as a Clinical Laboratory Technician at Utrecht University in The Netherlands in 1970. She then worked for a number of years in Ethiopia. She first came to Tanzania in 1980 to work as a laboratory technician in a rural mission hospital. From 1984 till 1988 she worked in the Nordic Clinic in Dar es Salaam. From 1988 until rejoining the Nordic Clinic in1992, she did malaria research at Muhimbili University Hospital, research work in Kenya and was the local study supervisor of a masters programme linked to Uppsala University. She also worked at the Nordic Dental Clinic and the US Embassy Health Unit during this period of time. In 2004 she joined the IST clinic as a laboratory consultant and the IST Clinic is very fortunate to benefit form her very extensive knowledge of tropical laboratory investigations. Together with one other IST Clinic Laboratory Technician, she participated in a one week refresher course on HIV/AIDS for laboratory technicians in Zimbabwe in October 2005.
