Planetary Unfolding – Michael Stearns I’m diving into Ambient music for the first time and this is bar none the best list I have found. While ambient music as a genre enjoys a healthy displacement of time, a very few albums achieve a truly timeless quality. I would have loved to have seen ‘More Beautiful Human Life’ by Uzect Plauch on there, as well as ‘Halve Maen’ by Double Leopards; but that’s the thing about musical opinions eh?
It still sounds fresh all these years later. peaceful, atmospheric, mellow, melancholic, instrumental, warm, calm, meditative, minimalistic, sombre, soothing, lush, soft, ethereal, repetitive. I’m starting at the top, with “Rainbow Dome Musick”, which is fabulous.
There are a lot of stone classics you’ve inexcusably overlooked ;-). Crafted by Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard, it struck the vanguard of the genre in a way that makes many other great albums of its era feel extraneous, if only for a minute. True or not, the effect of this music feels exactly like being inside a dream: not necessarily idyllic, with a strangeness that haunts you long into your waking day. Bird sounds were imitated through ocarinas and, after failing to craft her desired sonics through sake bottles, Takada began experimenting with Coca-Cola glasses. It’s kind of an outlier in their catalog but it’s maybe my favorite.
I definitely regret leaving off Substrata – it’s one of my favorite ambient albums without a doubt. After the retirement of Mkaju Ensemble, the group’s distinct mix of sounds naturally evolved past their short-lived existence, threading through Takada’s solo debut Through the Looking Glass in 1983.
5 years on from the all important Music For Airports and the genre of ambient has already evolved beyond belief. This is the logical conclusion of shoegaze: ambient bliss. If only any airport on earth were like this; the image it evokes—of patient, optimistic travelers gliding soundlessly along moving walkways while sun falls across gleaming surfaces of aluminum and glass—seems unlikely to be made real in our lifetimes.
Like Stars of the Lid, Steve Roach approaches the genre with spartan ideals, stripping the music down to its central essence and then amplifying that elemental spark into a massive conflagration. And, while I’m thinking of it… Substrata and/or Shenzhou by Biosphere, Journey to the Sun by Adham Shaikh, and for something more experimental, Radio Amor by Tim Hecker. In a healthy state, analog tape is pale brown, the color of the magnetic audio recording contained therein. Deep Listening introduced into ambient music the radical possibilities of the body to overcome itself, just by listening hard enough. Lots of great music, ambient and otherwise, has been made by folks holding down keys on synthesizers. Thank you! It’s probably the Twin Peaks fan in me….
This low key masterpiece is a perfect example of how 1990s techno could swerve deep into 1970s kosmische territory. She brought the trombonist Stuart Dempster and the sound artist/vocalist Panaiotis to record music that doesn’t sound of this world.

I just posted my latest Wreck This Mess ambient soundscape radio show, Wreck WinterCold 1221. There’s a lot of heart and heartache in this obtuse record, waiting to be unearthed. But Pygmalion is where Slowdive truly blossomed into an utterly unique form of ambient avant garde dreampop.
I’ve always been infatuated with this sound. That train to the future has long since left the station (and derailed in a fiery heap). Where his earlier work favored the crackle of garbled transmissions and clanging metallic wires, Harmony in Ultraviolet leans toward heavy, layered drone, drifting by like a massive airship that appears far too heavy to remain aloft, a Star Wars-scale object that blots out the sky and shoots off sparks. This album can easily become an obsession.
The arrangements find the middle ground between careful composition and pure drone, and the result is so beautiful and sad, it becomes funny, something the song titles seem to acknowledge (see: “The Lonely People (Are Getting Lonelier)”). there is a lot of treacle out there. This introduced me to some really interesting and fascinating finds! They included a lot of great albums, but missed some really interesting ones. In emphasizing the specifics—Elvis launching into “In the Ghetto,” or a preacher repeatedly imploring you, the listener, to get ready—they achieved a kind of wayward, everyday clamor: music and voices and car horns, all sinking in deep.

Thanks! It’s truly the ideal world Riley imagined in his poem—and it feels like music that soundtracks discovery. Admittedly you can state objectively that it served its intended purpose beautifully; this is an album that was produced to be something that could occupy the background unobtrusively yet also withstand slightly more close observation and pull both of them off. It's hard to shake those first impressions though, and even after 5 years I just can't quite come to terms with Refinement of the Decline. Although from a rock background, Eno's ambient music bears almost no resemblance to popular song forms. Diverging from the harder sounds of psych rock, Watering a Flower sees Hosono weave a more meditative soundscape, filled with hypnotic refrains. The act of turning on the radio is a transportative one, instantly bridging the gap between us and the station where it is sourced; suddenly, sound waves being generated many hundreds, even thousands, of miles away are encoded, sent, decoded and relayed, all of it from mouth to ear in seconds. Again, thank you! OPN is one of my favorite artists and that is a gem of an album.
