We aimed to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on racial/ethnic groups in the United States (US) and to assess the effects of social distancing, social vulnerability metrics, and medical disparities. The state health department first acknowledged the racial gap in COVID-19 vaccine distribution earlier this year, when it released data that showed only 4.34% of the people who had received the shots by late January were Latino and only 1.84% of vaccinated people were Black — percentages that were well below their share of the state’s population. Unfortunately, many racial and ethnic minorities continue to also be the target of misinformation and disinformation related to COVID-19. Unemployment and loss of health insurance: Racial and ethnic minority groups experienced higher job losses during the COVID-19 pandemic causing increased financial instability and may result in loss of health insurance, reduced access to healthcare, and food and housing insecurity. The study pointed out a flaw in the way previous research has looked at COVID-19 mortality rates, since they failed to use age-adjusted data to get a clearer picture of racial disparities.
